Listener Reviews

I love it here ☺️
Practical Stoicism is a really healthy community. Not only does Tanner provide an easily comprehensible and applicable explanation of Stoicism, he cares a lot about the audience as individuals, which is evident in all of his openings and greetings. He's honest, humble, down-to-earth, and open. The ads aren't as bad as other people may have you believe, and Tanner has put a great effort into coming to a compromise between user enjoyment and his ability to make a living. Here's to living in the moment and taking our first steps as stoic prokoptons!
Great philosophy podcast
I always thought Stoicism was a kind of macho philosophy, but this podcast does a great job of explaining the human aspects and how it relates to vulnerability and dealing with disappointment and failure. I also like the succinct episodes because everything is boiled down to the very heart of the matter. Not a wasted second, which shows that the host puts a lot of thought into the information and doesn’t just hit “record” and start talking.
Thoughtfully Succinct
I am a huge supporter of Tanner; calling into acknowledgment both his keen sense of observation and thoughtful integrity. With judicious temperance, Practical Stoicism serves as a benchmark of stoic wisdom and reason. In the present society perhaps lacking a realistic and moralistically ideal compass - this podcast is a shining beacon guiding back our wayward strays.
Refreshing and thoughtful
Enjoying this newer podcast on stoicism, in particular the conversation most recently with James Romm. Tanner’s commentary is also thoughtful and measured. Looking forward to more interviews and conversations to come. Thank you.
Excellent
Nothing else need be said.
Well done
Practical and on point, with out any flowery feel good points others make on Stoic pod cast. One has to remember this is challenging to understand but difficult to practice and is a life long pursuit.
Best of all of them!
The podcaster acts with honesty and best of all, humility. Fine insight into stoic thoughts.
Excellent
This is an excellent pod on Stoicism. I curate content I take in strictly. This pod adds so much understanding and knowledge in a small package it makes perfect sense to take the time to listen. Thank you.
I love this - thank you
Thank you so much for recording this series. I realise, listening to this podcast, that I am a stoic - I just didn’t know it. Good straightforward practical advice about how to live a life. Common sense from a time near the very beginning of recorded ‘western’ thinking. Totally relevant to today’s world. Which, I think, just goes to show its inherent worth.
ADHD!🧡🫂
thank you thank you thank you for being open about your ADHD. i love your podcast in general but in your episode ‘Training Your Attention’ i had to pause when you said you have ADHD. i almost cried because i relate to you. i’ve spent a majority of my life unmedicated and recently got back on medication. now i’m making the decision to go back off medication because you’re right, the side effects aren’t worth it. I just turned 24 on the 12th, I’ve also recently accepted my ADHD and its challenges out loud, I have a workbook on it, podcasts and there’s an app called Inflow that is GREAT for ADHD!!! So you mentioning that at this period of my life helped me remember I’m not alone and I hope you remember that too. It also made this episode hit closer to home knowing you relate. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Perfect episode and perfect personal expression for it. It’s October and it’s ADHD awareness month, you’re not alone!! Love it, thanks. 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Enjoyed today’s episode
Tanner took on a hard topic today and did it well. That is how things like marijuana or alcohol etc. mesh with Stoic principles. Personally I find that things like this or any other addiction that takes away from being present to be counter to my Stoic practice. They can at times control and rob us of the moment or let us escape dealing with something that we really should address in order to live a fuller life. Part of my practice is to pursue and try to manage the triggers in my life that can make me react in way that is not beneficial. I use Stoicism and meditation as a way to seek greater control over myself and my mind. I don’t always succeed but as Tanner notes, there aren’t too many if any sages out there.
Usefulness
I really like how starting my morning with stoicism gives me challenges throughout the day. It has increased the beauty of my own consciousness. More purpose to my life.
This is a Great find!
For those that are complaining about ads… You do know this is a fee podcast AND you can fast forward through them. Great content and more of what the world needs.
This is it!
I thought I was quite familiar with the Stoic way of life... until I heard this guy talk. There is a way and a tone in which he explains the great stoic principles that ANYONE can benefit deeply from it. Stop searching. This is it.
Great even for young audiences
Great podcast even for someone who is younger. These meditations really inspire and help along small changes in behavior. Thank you for making this podcast
Gratitude
I feel so blessed being showed this podcast at the age of 27. I’ve been listening for a month now and have replayed the first 7 episodes religiously taking the same amount of value as the first play through every replay. Thank you for your time in doing this for us as listeners and fellow stoics.
A great podcast to learn about Stoicism
I’ve only recently started learning more about Stoicism, and I’ve found this podcast to be extremely useful and helpful. And the way Tanner articulates the mediations, is easy to understand. Keep up the good work Tanner, 5 ⭐️
Thanks!
A very gentle introduction to meditations. I am finding myself listening to each brief episode multiple times. Although I may not always agree with the host’s interpretations and emphasis the format of reviewing each meditation followed by discussion is very accessible and helpful. Highly recommended!
Emphasis on the “Practical”
As a young person in the 1980s, stoicism meant putting up with great pain and discomfort without complaining. The word had been separated from the philosophy, in much the same way that modernism was a style of design rather than a philosophy. Knowing the roots of things was too time-consuming. One had just enough information to know that the New Yorker cartoon was funny, but not enough to know why. I have been enjoying the pod’s brevity, focus, clarity, and above all, its practicality. I am now primed to read the original texts with a modicum of insight.
What Tanner provides is exactly what I need right now.
I fell upon Stoicism in 2019, but only as far understanding that it teaches acceptance and how to ‘deal with things’. Since then I never gave it much thought. But a month ago I was told that my time on this planet now has a very predictable timeframe. The last two weeks have been tough - and during a very recent episode of insomnia I fell across Practical Stoicism and I am so glad that I did. Tanner gives just enough of an explanation into a meditation to help you understand more about what about what it means, but more importantly it whets the appetite and leaves you yearning for more. For this I thank you Tanner :) Nizan Horsefield
Amazing podcast
You have to love people that want to better themselves by bettering others. Love your podcast!
I love it!
This is one of my favorite podcasts! I’m fairly new to stoicism, and frankly, philosophy. This podcast is super insightful and I’m excited for what’s to come in the future. I’ll be ordering the paperback books as soon as I can!
Great Podcast!
This is currently my favorite Stoic podcast. Tanner does an amazing job at making Stoicism more relatable to modern day life and I love hearing his interpretation.
Terrific
Love the structure of how he is going through Meditations and hopefully moving on to Epictetus, Seneca, etc.. after. Bought the book also. 👍🏻
